  1. The Great Wall of China is not a single wall, but a series of walls, defense towers, and moat systems. The walls that have survived to this day were mostly built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
  2. The total length of the Great Wall is approximately 21,196 kilometers, making it the longest human-made structure in the world.
  3. The Great Wall of China is known as “Wanli Changcheng” by the Chinese, which means “Ten Thousand Li Wall” in English. A “li” is a traditional Chinese unit of measurement that is equivalent to approximately 500 meters.
  4. The Great Wall was not originally built for military purposes alone. It was also used for border control, observation, and customs duty collection.
  5. Many workers are believed to have died during the construction of the Great Wall of China. Some sources claim that more than one million workers died during the construction.

 

  1. Much of the wall was constructed by mixing soil, placing stones, and putting mud on top. Some sections were also built using bricks.
  2. The Great Wall was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987.

  5. Some historical accounts claim that during the construction of the Great Wall of China, workers who slowed down the progress were punished by being buried alive within the wall. However, this claim has not been definitively proven.
