Western Sahara State

Western Sahara state. Instead, the Western Sahara is a disputed territory located in North Africa, bordered by Morocco to the north, Algeria to the northeast, Mauritania to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

The status of Western Sahara has been a long-standing international issue. After Spain relinquished its colonial control over the territory in 1975, both Morocco and Mauritania claimed sovereignty over parts of Western Sahara. This led to armed conflicts with the Sahrawi independence movement, Polisario Front, which declared the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) as the government-in-exile.

In 1991, a United Nations-brokered ceasefire was established, and the UN deployed a peacekeeping mission known as MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) to monitor the situation. However, a referendum to determine the territory’s final status has not taken place, and the issue remains unresolved.

Morocco currently controls most of Western Sahara, while the Polisario Front governs the refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria. The Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and the question of sovereignty over the territory are still subjects of ongoing negotiations and international discussions.

Please note that the situation in the region may have evolved since my last update, and I recommend checking more recent sources for the latest developments regarding Western Sahara.
